Neurodiverse Couples Counselling
Couples often seek therapy when communication has broken down and conflict continuously repeats, Over time these patterns of hurt, dysregulation and miscommunication become exhausting leaving both partners feeling that there is nothing to strive for anymore.
In couples shaped by trauma these patterns can become particularly painful. Nervous systems move at different speeds and protective strategies developed in childhood to keep us safe, interfere with connection and build walls not bridges.
With neurodiverse couples where one or both people in the relationship is neurodiverse, I see these same patterns of pain and disconnection repeating themselves. This is rarely through lack of love it is more often about overwhelmed nervous systems and young parts feeling abandoned.
As a PACT therapist I am committed to the view that exiled young parts, locked away in childhood, can be healed and integrated and that the adult parts can learn to read each others nervous systems and as a result be each others soft place to fall; that you can become a securely functioning couple.
As a PACT practitioner and neurodiverse human, I have also found that sometimes the PACT system, as good as it is, can be a little too fast, a little too confrontational for sensitive clients so I use my SE, somatic practice, drama and play therapy training to soften this process and focus on coaching you to become each others external regulators just as a mother is for her child. In addition you will become an expert on your partner and they will become an expert in you. In this way as a couple you can heal together and grow into the loving, considerate, adult couple that you want to be.
